Let’s talk hosting!
I recently had a chat with someone who was concerned about the price of their hosting, so I thought it would be useful to have a quick chat about hosting, why it’s important, and why cheapest might not be the best.
So, what is hosting? Well it’s the digital space we build our website upon. I’m not going to delve deep into the different types of hosting, most of us will be looking at shared hosting and that’s fine for what we need.
Now your hosting is kind of like the land that you build your house on. You’re not gonna want to build your house on land that might be unstable right? You’re going to build it on the best land, that is stable, has no rivers running through it and no swamps or bogs on it.
And this is why I think it’s important NOT to look at hosting on a price basis. This is not the time to look at something and go with the cheapest possible thing you can find.
Speed has been a ranking factor for Google for a while now, the cheaper your hosting generally the more people who are sharing the same space (makes sense right) and so the speed might not be the best.
Back ups – does the hosting take back ups, how often, how easy are they to use?
Caching – does the hosting have built in caching – often responsible for lots of little website niggles.
Recently Google have announced that ‘Core Web Vitals’ will become a part of their website assessment and ranking next year as well.
These are to do with loading, interactivity and visual stability – I’ll go into much more detail in a further post, but a large part of this concerns how your website is built and what it runs on.
In conclusion – quality hosting means a more stable environment for your website, faster load times overall, and a better user experience for you the user.
So if you are building your own website and looking for hosting, please remember, this is something to invest in, not find the best deal in!
